A couple who met at a strip clip now live off-grid in the jungle – and they are raising their kids on an active volcano .

Zoe has captured the internet’s attention by detailing her unconventional lifestyle, where she and her family reside in a self-built cabin in Hawaii, raise birds for meat, and use a bucket for a toilet. This shift came after Zoe and her partner Brian left Nevada to embrace a self-sustaining life, free from utility bills.

Brian, father to two children with Zoe, explained, “The whole goal the entire time was to be able to buy some land and build our own house and kind of live self-sustainably.”

With assistance from friends, they constructed their home, utilizing solar power and rainwater collection. They also enjoy the fruits from nearby jungle trees while managing a variety of animals. However, living on an active volcano has its perils, and Zoe has faced criticism for raising her children, aged three and seven, in such a location.

In an interview with Truly TV, Zoe defended their choice: “Living on an active volcano might seem kind of… stupid, I guess you could say, but I feel safer here than I do in the city.” As a cancer survivor, Zoe maintains that they have all the essentials at home, including a large refrigerator, cooker, radio, and coffee maker, alongside a spacious kitchen, living area, bathroom, and bunk beds. However, she acknowledges the lifestyle’s quirks, noting, “Whenever we have visitors they kind of look at me like oh we have to use a bucket.”

Brian added, “We have every appliance that everybody has in a standard home, we just don’t pay the utility companies.” Zoe often shares videos of her trips to Costco, a two-hour walk from their property, to gather supplies.

The couple has taken measures to ensure safety, like covering lava tubes, which are cracks in the ground. Zoe clarified common misconceptions about living on a volcano, saying, “I think a lot of people are very animated when they think about volcanoes and they think that there must be lava everywhere.”

Their children, Zaina (seven) and Isla (three), are “unschooled,” learning through their interests and natural curiosity. Zoe, who shares her life on TikTok, expressed her contentment: “I feel really good about this life. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” However, her viral fame has brought mixed reactions from the online community.

“Living like this would depress me,” one person commented. On YouTube, another user criticized, “Setting your children up for failure, what’s going to happen when they get older and have to live in the real world? How will they get a job or know how to live their own lives if something happens to you or your husband?”

A different parent argued, “There are so many reasons school is important for growing brains.” However, not all feedback was negative; some found the lifestyle appealing. One admired it as “whimsical,” while someone else on TikTok confessed, “I’m so jealous.”

The lifestyle also sparked interest, with one comment reading, “So interesting.” Yet, there were concerns about the children’s education, with one person stating, “Her kids are going to be ignorant.” Another perspective was more positive, noting, “You look so free despite the hard work you put in to have this life.”
