A tourist declared missing and the focus of an extensive police search was unaware she was considered missing and even participated in the search herself.
According to Morgunblaðið, the story unfolded when a woman described as “Asian, about 160cm tall, wearing dark clothing, and speaking English well” was reported missing near Eldgjá in southern Iceland.
The search continued without any trace of her until the next morning, when she was found, unaware that she had been the subject of the search. The confusion arose from a misunderstanding about her appearance. She had actually changed clothes before reboarding the bus, leading to the erroneous assumption that she hadn’t returned.
Adding to the surreal nature of the event, she joined the search party, not realizing at first that she was the person everyone was looking for. Eventually, she realized she might be the “missing person” described and informed the police, who then called off the search.
